Frequently Asked Questions
What occurs during an intake meeting?
Intake meetings serve as valuable opportunities for mutual understanding and engagement. These sessions provide insights into your organization, facilitate virtual connections, and deepen our comprehension of your mission. Organizations gain insights into our foundation, its mission, and funding interests. Key questions during the intake meeting include:
- Overview of your organization
- Identification of your greatest need
- Description of the proposed solution
- Methods for quantifying the solution's impact
- Overview of current donor support
- Plans for leveraging our grant
We encourage organizations to invite key decision-makers and policymakers to intake meetings, recognizing this as a chance to make a positive impression. Intake meetings with video "on" are preferred.
When are grant applications due?
Grant applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Applications received by11:59pm on the last day of the month are carefully reviewed throughout the following month and then voted on the first week of the subsequent month.
Do you support general operating?
Unless we have a well-established partnership, we prefer to provide restricted gifts that enhance programmatic initiatives rather than supporting general operating funds. While general operating support is vital for the long-term sustainability of nonprofit organizations, restricted gifts allow us to ensure our contributions are directed toward specific efforts that align closely with our philanthropic goals and priorities. This approach fosters more impactful and mutually rewarding outcomes for both Foxwynd and the recipient organization.
How large are your grants?
Our grants vary in size. Several factors influence the funding amount, including whether the organization is based in PA, if it's a first-time or renewed grant, alignment with our pillars, the quality of reporting, stewardship, and how the grant was leveraged. Typically, first-time grants, those out of state, and those aligned with only one pillar tend to be much smaller, while renewed grants and those aligned with multiple pillars may receive larger funding.
What type of leverage is needed?
We prioritize partnering with organizations that demonstrate the capacity to leverage our support effectively. For organizations with annual revenues exceeding $1 million, a 1:1 matching requirement is requested as part of the grant process. This leveraging requirement is a key criterion for grant approval, as it reflects organizational momentum and strong community engagement.
Do you support capital campaigns?
Yes, as long as the following three conditions are met:
1. At least 50% of the funding must have been raised.
2. We will only invest in Capital Campaigns that will be carried out regardless of how much money is raised.
3. Capital Campaign project must already be underway (breaking ground, reno, enhancements, etc).
What type of stewardship is preferred?
Stewardship, complemented by comprehensive reporting, is pivotal for renewed support. We appreciate personalized expressions of gratitude, including hand-written thank-you notes, photographs, letters, and videos. We welcome opportunities to participate in events, serve as guest speakers, or contribute to boards.
How can we stand out?
Your assistance in facilitating connections is invaluable to us. We appreciate shout-outs on LinkedIn and efforts to establish new connections. Personal referrals from subject matter experts are particularly impactful. Your networking efforts contribute to meaningful connections and enhance our collective impact.
Who should schedule a site visit?
If geographically possible, organizations invited to apply for $40,000+ should request a site visit.
Can I submit for than one proposal per year?
There is no limit to the number of applications an organization can submit in a year. However, it is uncommon for an organization to receive more than one grant in a calendar year, as any repeat or additional funding is contingent on the quality of the grantee’s final report.
Can non-profits outside of Pennsylvania apply?
As we step into 2025, the Foxwynd Foundation has taken time to reflect on our inaugural year. By analyzing our 2024 data, we’ve identified key trends that will help us refine our approach and better serve our constituents.
One significant shift is in our geographic focus. While Pennsylvania has been a priority, we are expanding our reach to Texas, California, and Florida - home to many of the Bentley children. In 2025, 80% of our funding will be directed toward initiatives in these four regions. However, we will continue to consider grant applications from outside these areas, allocating up to 20% of our budget to impactful projects beyond our primary focus.
We look forward to strengthening our partnerships and increasing our impact in the year ahead. Nonprofits dedicated to housing, healthcare, and environmental sustainability—stay tuned for upcoming funding opportunities!
What type of environmental projects are funded?
We prioritize funding projects with a clear, measurable impact rather than initiatives with broad or abstract objectives. For example, we are more inclined to support tangible activities such as tree planting over programs like conservation education. Additionally, our focus is on building partnerships with organizations that are nonpartisan and refrain from engaging in lobbying activities.
Will the Foundation consider multi-year pledges?
Multi-year pledges are only available to non-profits in our Foxwynd Fellowship Program.
