I met Michael in a Boston subway station. I told him I liked his sign. “What matters is what it means to you,” he told me. I asked what it meant to him. “Doing a deed or expressing kindness to another person without expecting anything in return,” Michael said. I love approaching strangers wherever I go. Listening and talking to them teaches you about people and how similar we all are to one another. Just like Michael, we’re all seeking human kindness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What occurs during an intake meeting?

Intake meetings serve as valuable opportunities for mutual understanding and engagement. These sessions provide insights into your organization, facilitate virtual connections, and deepen our comprehension of your mission. Organizations gain insights into our foundation, its mission, and funding interests. Key questions during the intake meeting include:

  - Overview of your organization
  - Identification of your greatest need
  - Description of the proposed solution
  - Methods for quantifying the solution's impact
  - Overview of current donor support
  - Plans for leveraging our grant

We encourage organizations to invite key decision-makers and policymakers to intake meetings, recognizing this as a chance to make a positive impression. Intake meetings with video "on" are preferred.

When are grant applications due?

Grant applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Applications received by11:59pm on the last day of the month are carefully reviewed throughout the following month and then voted on the first week of the subsequent month.

Do you support general operating?

We prefer to make a restricted gifts that enhance programmatic usage rather than supporting general operating funds. While supporting general operating funds is essential for the overall sustainability of nonprofit organizations, restricted gifts provide a way for us to ensure that our contributions are used in a manner that directly aligns with our philanthropic goals and interests. This approach can lead to more meaningful and satisfying outcomes for both Foxwynd and the recipient organization.

How large are your grants?

Our grants vary in size. Several factors influence the funding amount, including whether the organization is based in PA, if it's a first-time or renewed grant, alignment with our pillars, the quality of reporting, stewardship, and how the grant was leveraged. Typically, first-time grants, those out of state, and those aligned with only one pillar tend to be much smaller, while renewed grants and those aligned with multiple pillars may receive larger funding.

What type of leverage is needed?

We prioritize organizations capable of leveraging our support. Leverage, in our view, encompasses both impact and monetary aspects. We consider a grant leveraged when its utilization extends beyond the original project, benefiting other initiatives or organizations. Grants of $50,000 or more are asked to match 1:1. Leveraging is integral to grant approval, demonstrating momentum and community engagement.

Do you support capital campaigns?

Yes, as long as the following three conditions are met:

1. At least 50% of the funding must have been raised.
2. We will only invest in Capital Campaigns that will be carried out regardless of how much money is raised.
3. Capital Campaign project must already be underway (breaking ground, reno, enhancements, etc).

What type of stewardship is preferred?

Stewardship, complemented by comprehensive reporting, is pivotal for renewed support. We appreciate personalized expressions of gratitude, including hand-written thank-you notes, photographs, letters, and videos. We welcome opportunities to participate in events, serve as guest speakers, or contribute to boards.

How can we stand out?

Your assistance in facilitating connections is invaluable to us. We appreciate shout-outs on LinkedIn and efforts to establish new connections. Personal referrals from subject matter experts are particularly impactful. Your networking efforts contribute to meaningful connections and enhance our collective impact.

Who should schedule a site visit?

If geographically possible, organizations invited to apply for $50,000+ should request a site visit

Can I submit for than one proposal per year?

There is no limit to the number of applications an organization can submit in a year. However, it is uncommon for an organization to receive more than one grant in a calendar year, as any repeat or additional funding is contingent on the quality of the grantee’s final report.
